1. Garlic – contains allicin, a substance that has antibacterial, antioxidant, anti hypertensive effect, and reduces fat. In a pilot study in the Clinical Research Center in New Orleans, on whether garlic can lower the pressure, nine patients with severe hypertension were given a mixture of garlic from 1.3% allicin. Only five to 14 hours after taking this dose, their blood pressure has decreased, also with significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure. Another study published in 2009 showed that fresh garlic has a more powerful protective effect on the heart than processed garlic.
2. Cinnamon – this spice helps in preventing heart disease and reduces the risk of diabetes. Center for Applied Science in Health in Ohio conducted a test on 22 subjects; half were given 250 mg of cinnamon daily, and the other half were given a placebo. It was found that those who drank cinnamon have 13 to 23% higher levels of antioxidants linked with lowering blood sugar.
3. Olive – is an important ingredient of the Mediterranean diet, which is one of the healthiest diets in the world. It was found that olive oil lowers blood pressure. In one study on the importance of olive oil, Dr. Aldo L. Ferrara, assistant professor at the University of Naples, found that daily consumption of 40 g of olive oil helped hypertensive patients reduce the dose of drugs against pressure by 50%. It is believed that this is due to polyphenols which can be found in olive oil.
4. Oregano – this plant contains an ingredient called carvacrol which is very effective against high blood pressure. In experiments on animals, conducted on Eskisehir Osmangazi University in Turkey, it was found that carvacrol lowers heart rate and balances blood pressure, as well as the systolic and diastolic pressure.
5. Hawthorn – in the traditional medicine this plant is used to treat high blood pressure. In one study conducted at Reading University in England, a group of 72 patients with type 2 diabetes were treated with an extract of hawthorn (1200 mg per day), while the other group received medication for high blood pressure. Results found that patients who took hawthorn after 16 weeks showed a reduction of the diastolic blood pressure.
