Serotonin, or as some call it – the hormone of happiness, acts as a neurotransmitter in the body, transmitting nerve impulses in the brain. It is located in the brain and gastrointestinal tract. This hormone is extremely necessary for regulation of many body functions.
When you do not have enough of serotonin in the body, deficit of serotonin syndrome appears, which leads to appearance of certain symptoms, such as:
- Mood disorders
- Sleep disorders
- Excessive need for food
- Stomach pains
So in order to improve the level of serotonin levels in your body and prevent the symptoms listed above, we bring you a few tips. Start practicing this them, increase your serotonin levels, start feeling better, and be happy!
- The sun is your friend – try to spend at least 30 minutes in the sun every day. Studies of the US National Institute of Health show that sunlight has strong and positive effect on serotonin levels. If you do not work in an open space, increasing the brightness in the room has a good effect also.
- Good old exercise – as with the sun exposure, try to work out 30 minutes every day or any kind of physical activity, because exercise raises the level of serotonin in the body. Brisk walking, cycling and swimming are a great way for better serotonin functioning, and this will help you feel better and continue with the exercise.
- Food consumption – tryptophan, an amino acid that the body converts into serotonin, can be found in turkey meat. Eat foods that contain healthy sources of protein and increase the intake of ingredients that are rich in amino acids (white meat, eggs and dairy products).
- At the end: Optimism – choose a positive way of thinking. In a study conducted by the previously mentioned institute, it has been proven that people who have pessimistic view of the world, had low levels of the hormone serotonin. Hostility is associated with lack of friendships and socializing, and all this leads to isolation and depression. Symptoms of depression and low levels of serotonin are closely linked. Optimistic thinking has a productive effect on the entire body, including reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
